Friday night I started knitting a shawl with the Manos I bought last month when Maggie was here (she’s making the same one).
I’m using bigger needles (10.5) because it’s all I had and I was too lazy to go buy more. Hoping it tightens up slightly when I block it. The yarn is really nice to knit with, though. The pattern is sensible and I’m finding it very relaxing. I started with brown, moved to varigated, and I’ll toss in a little more brown at some point and end it with black. I have to remember to leave enough yarn for tassles – how do you figure out how much to save?

Manos! I love that yarn (tho have never knitted with it). I always think if that yarn were to have a voice, it would be very husky and deep.
No tips on the tassles, I always just kinda wing it when I want to add fringe to something (ie. hope for the best and then take what you get).
Yeah, I have no idea about saving for fringe. How did you decide to stripe the yarn?
I did fewer purl ridges in mine. I just knit the shawl in stockinette until I thought I should toss in a purl row, here and there.
How are you finding the pattern?
I’m not really striping; more like doing blocks of color? I’m kind of winging it. I just know that I wanted to start with brown and end with black. I guess we’ll see what happens!
I enjoy the pattern! Because of the middle yo k1 yo, it’s easy for me to find my place if I lose count. So far, so good. I can still watch tv and stuff, which is the way I like to knit.
When the shawl gets bigger and bigger, you might want to put a saftey pin somewhere along the center yo k1 yo just so you can at a glance gauge how far you are from the middle. When your stitches start to get squished on the needle, it’s easy to just knit right past the middle! Ask me how I know.
Heh. I was thinking about a safety pin or a piece of red yarn. Thanks for reminding me. I almost missed it yesterday, actually.
Mmmm….Manos! Love that stuff. Looks good so far — I love the colors.
normally, i just use the tassels from my stripper costume,
but you know how hard it is to always find the matching ones after a long night. . .
